Duct cleaning is not something that needs to be a part of your regular home maintenance checklist. Conditions vary in each home, so you as a homeowner must gauge whether or not duct cleaning is necessary. That being said, here are the top 5 scenarios in which you should consider having your air ducts cleaned.

1. Remodels/Renovations:

Have you made renovations to your home?  If so, did you seal off your ducts? If your home has been remodeled and you did not seal off your air ducts, you may have harmful dust and debris lodged inside your ductwork.  In this circumstance, it would be beneficial to have your ductwork cleaned.

2. Mold:

Is there visible mold growth inside the duct work or on other parts of your heating and cooling system?  If so, the ducts and HVAC system should be cleaned.  Also, consider looking into the cause for the mold growth in the first place.  If these conditions are not corrected, the mold growth will reoccur and cause you more problems in the future.

3. Contaminants:

Do you notice pet hairs, debris, or other contaminants being released into a room through the ducts? If this is the case, the ducts may be clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris, which would cause the particles to be released into your home from your supply registers. In this situation, it would be beneficial to have your ducts cleaned.

4. Animal Infestation:

Do you think you have an animal infestation in your HVAC system or air ducts? If you discover evidence of animal nesting or infestation, first have the animal debris removed. Then, clean the duct work or HVAC unit.

5. Illness:

Is someone in your family experiencing an allergy-related illness? Have you taken all measures to decontaminate your home and the illness still exists?  Consider having your ducts cleaned to determine if the HVAC system is the culprit for the allergy-related illness.
